Introduction

Artificial intelligence has rapidly evolved from a niche laboratory curiosity into a ubiquitous, game-changing technology. Today, large language models (LLMs) can craft entire essays with minimal prompting or solve advanced legal problems in seconds. Researchers at major AI labs (and plenty of smaller ones) are sprinting to produce even more sophisticated systems—while pressing questions remain unanswered about how these systems might fail us in unexpected (and potentially catastrophic) ways.

The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) recently published its 2023 Impact Report, and if there’s one thing to take from their findings, it’s this: AI’s explosive growth carries equally explosive risks. Tech leaders worldwide increasingly recognize that ignoring safety and oversight for AI is a bet we can’t afford to lose. In this post, we’ll explore some of the report’s main lessons about the staggering risks of AI and why we need far more robust guardrails—pronto.
